Chapel Hill, NC (June 3, 2010) - Divi Resorts announced today a special opportunity for guests at the Divi Flamingo Beach Resort in Bonaire to experience coral spawning, one of the most spectacular biological phenomena on Earth. A rarely seen but never forgotten event for most divers, coral spawning occurs only two to three times a year.
"It may require some patience to watch coral spawning, but you will definitely not be disappointed when it happens," stated Serge De Groote, dive operations manager of the Divi Flamingo Beach Resort.
The best "spawning dives" take place four to eight nights after a full moon. Divi Flamingo Beach Resort has thus organized travel and dive packages around the prime periods for viewing the coral's reproduction: September 25/26 - October 02/03 and October 23/24 - October 30/31. Says Groote, "Of course, we can't control nature, but divers in the waters off the Divi Flamingo Bay can expect to witness coral reproduction of the Boulder Star, Brain, Great Star, Sea Rod and Branching corals." Other underwater creatures also spawn during this period, such as brittle stars, cucumbers, sea-urchins, sponges (e.g. Touch-Me-Nots), fireworms and feather duster worms, adding to the underwater show.
The package includes extensive dives during visitors' stays, along with lectures by Denise and Ruud Janssen, expert divers and experienced tour guides for coral spawning. The husband and wife team are with Divi Dive Bonaire, the Flamingo Beach Resort's onsite five-star dive facility. "The Janssens provide great knowledge and expertise to this travel experience; the entire experience is one to not be missed," De Groote said. "To witness something so rare in a place as beautiful as Bonaire and just a few yards off shore from the resort is truly a memorable event."
The package, which is from $965 per person, includes the following amenities and activities:
• Seven nights accommodation at Divi Flamingo
• Daily breakfast buffets
• Daily two-tank boat dives
• Unlimited shore diving
• One free night boat dive during spawning
• One night dive on Calabas reef with certified instructors
• Pre-dive lectures by the Janssens
